Discovered and developed by Dr. Roger Callahan PhD, a Californian clinical psychologist with over 45 years of experience, Thought Field Therapy is best described as a natural, drug-free, non-invasive system to eliminate the root cause of negative emotion.  The key to this extraordinary therapy has been Dr. Callahan’s discovery of the natural code that appears to govern psychological problems, and an effective treatment for the phenomenon of Psychological Reversal – the tendency for some individuals to unconsciously self-sabotage their own recovery despite outwardly seeking to rid themselves of their problem.

Now in its twenty-fifth year of development, TFT is extraordinarily powerful in that the majority of individuals receive nearly immediate relief from their suffering.  Most significantly, it does not require the individual to confront their problem, something that often causes considerable distress or embarrassment and which discourages many from seeking treatment in the first place.  It is also extremely efficient (treatment times of 10 minutes or less not uncommon) and has no adverse side effects.  Using algorithm procedures alone (the lowest level of proficiency) a therapist can anticipate an 80% success rate – success in this context meaning complete resolution of the client’s presenting problem.  Most significantly, TFT does not utilise hypnosis, cognitive / behavioural approaches, desensitisation, flooding or any other of the common strategies currently used in traditional psychotherapy.

How Is Thought Field Therapy Believed To Work?

Contrary to popular belief, TFT is not an “Energy Therapy” and does not concern itself with removing “blockages, disturbances or imbalances” in the energy system when someone has an emotional problem.  According to Dr. Callahan’s theory, the emotional (and occasionally, physical) signs and symptoms recognised by conventional medicine are generated by specific active information patterns (i.e. precisely coded programs) in the thought field generated whenever we think about something.  Most existing therapies simply attempt to subdue those symptoms with varying degrees of success, or teach the patient coping skills.  Whatever the outcome of such treatments the active information in the Thought Field (the cause of the problem in the first place) still remains.  In order to remove the offending program completely, and therefore the problem itself, one must apply a decode that nature has provided.  Put simply, TFT treatments work like deleting a program on a computer.  The delete instruction must be must be precise and targeted – if not the program remains active to exert its action once again.

In a typical TFT treatment classical meridian points are tapped with the fingers in a precise sequence whilst the individual focuses their thoughts on the distress the problem causes.  Essentially, Thought Field Therapy uses the meridian system in much the same way that a computer programmer would use a PC keyboard – as an access point to input coded information.  Although the treatment seems to be totally lacking in face validity, most patients notice an immediate and dramatic improvement in the way they feel following its application.  Further simple procedures then remove the distress completely.  A common response of patients when asked to think about their problem following the treatment is “I can’t”.  This is, of course, impossible as just to say those words means thinking about the problem.  What they mean to say is that all the symptoms that would indicate to them that they are thinking about their problem have gone!

Is TFT Painful In Any Way?

Not at all.  No needles or other instruments are involved, nor does it require the patient to talk at length about their problem, something that can often cause considerable distress or embarrassment and which discourages many from seeking treatment in the first place.

Does The Effect Last?

Most simple problems can be resolved in the course of one or two therapy sessions, but follow-up and self-help are recommended to monitor and maintain progress.  More complex problems are treated on an “as needed” basis as each facet or layer of the overall problem becomes apparent.  Whatever the problem, successful TFT treatments have been shown to endure over time.  However, following such treatment, the individual is also asked to record any reappearance of symptoms.  This allows the trigger factor for the recurrence to be identified and eliminated once and for all.  A unique feature of TFT, this “tracking” procedure contributes to the extraordinary endurance of the therapy.  It is important to state that the procedures do not work on everyone nor for every problem.  However, replicated research has shown that up to 97% of individuals undergoing TFT obtain the resolution they seek.
