Not many people know much about fibromyalgia but this debilitating illness can cause nasty symptoms, including insomnia, headaches and inexplicable aches across the body.
As it is a long-term condition, the 2.8 million people who suffer from it in the UK, according to Arthritis Research UK, can find it incredibly weakening
Medical treatment of this illness can include antidepressants, as the condition is caused by an abnormal level of chemicals in the brain and is often triggered by a stressful event. Painkillers can also be used to reduce sensitivity to pain, headaches and irritable bowel syndrome, which are all symptoms of the illness.
However, alternative therapies have been promoted as means to combat some of the worst effects, the Daily Express reported.
One particularly useful holistic remedy is acupuncture, which Mayo Clinic says can help relieve the constant pain sufferers experience.
Acupuncture comes from ancient Chinese philosophy and is about restoring the balance of energy in the body through the insertion of fine needles.
“According to Western theories of acupuncture, the needles cause changes in blood flower and levels of neurotransmitters in the brain and spinal cord. Some studies indicate that acupuncture helps relieve fibromyalgia symptoms,” Mayo Clinic claims.
Other natural ways to try and combat the symptoms of fibromyalgia is through lifestyle changes.
The news provider revealed a study published in BMC Complementary and Alternative Medicine, which showed that having a vegetarian or vegan diet can boost energy levels and reduce feelings of fatigue.
The National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases suggested avoiding sweets, eating foods that are high in energy and fibre, and combining protein or fats with carbohydrates to slow down their absorption.
