My 22-year-old daughter has slight scoliosis. What natural therapies might be able to help?

I completely feel for your daughter as she deals with this, Helen. as far as I'm aware there is no 'cure' for scoliosis. However, in terms of easing the pain and discomfort you might look at Alexander Technique which is less painful than an Osteopath. Manipulation of the muscles and spine in a gentle way to ease pain and discomfort. A Chiropractor may also be of help, especially one that uses kineseology as part of the therapy ( I know a good one in Blackheath if you need one). Regular massages to the muscles can also help to ease tension and pain.

    I hope this helps :)

Best wishes to you and your daughter as you deal with this.

Pilates builds core muscles that support the spine. It also increases flexibility and improves posture, thereby helping to lengthen the spine. By developing postural awareness and a better understanding of the body, your daughter will gradually be able to use Pilates techniques herself and hopefully feel less pain. Stretching will help relieve the stiffness on the worse side and exercising will reveal weaknesses in areas which need to be strengthened. Lateral breathing is also beneficial as it helps open up the back and chest.

In addition the Bowen Technique may help with pain and help relieve stiffness. Many clients report feeling much more relaxed and lighter after treatment.

    Best wishes,

I have been teaching Alexander Technique for 24 years and have a lot of experience of treating scoliosis. I'm currently seeing a young woman age 22 with scoliosis who has had huge improvement and has eliminated the pain she was experiencing. I would be very happy to see your daughter. I work in the City near to Liverpool Street and in north London near to Highgate.
    Best wishes

Nutritionally you can support bone and muscle. Supplements containing chondroitin, glucosamine, MSM, manganese (an important nutrient for joints) can help. Providing specific support for joints can help people to hold their manipulative treatment. I work with an osteopath who has had some success in helping to straighten the back. I agree with others in that it is good to develop body awareness, which can help the body to find realignment. If you want details on specific supplements please get in touch. Sue

Hi I have extreme scoliosis, 2 curves, one being almost 90 degrees it started when I was 4. Surgeries I had went wrong and I ended up having my spine fused. I started learning Reiki 14 years ago (aged 20) and it really helped with the pain so I can suggest this as an alternative to painkillers. Also exercise helps a lot! Keep as fit as you can without straining to much, gentle stretching and core strengthening exercises are best like yoga, hydrotherapy etc. Also I take supplements to keep my bones and muscles healthy. Most of all keep a positive frame of mind, don't let scoliosis hold you back!

Have you looked at Quantum Touch? www.quantumtouch.com and look at Healing Stories. I can refer you to a couple of QT Practitioner/Instructors in London if you wish.

Hello Helen. A good outcome can be hoped for depending upon the cause of your daughter's scoliosis. If it is it due to leg length discrepancies please inbox me and I will provide you with information so you are further armed to manage this. I also have a slight scoliosis (concave to the right)which thankfully has not worsened since discovered due to therapeutic intervention. My back has lengthened/strengthened considerably and my shoulders and lower back are more aligned, visceral balanced, tissues softened, muscles strengthened. My right shoulder blade is not winging anymore. Wishing you and your daughter the best.

I used the skills I learnt training as a BSc sports therapist/sports scientist to recognise the anthropological traits that make some more susceptical than others to scoliosis, among other things. If you are of African descent, again, inbox me.

    Hi Helen

I would definitely recommend having "the Dorn Method" it is a safe, natural and gentle method for better back and joint care.

I have it too at the top of my back and this helps immensely. Have a look at www.dornmethod.co.uk to find a local therapist.
