My mother who i care for is taking gabapentin for lower back pain and is also taking medication to reduce the risk of a stroke/heart attack along with medication to lower her cholesterol. She is feeling a numb sensation in her finger tips which is affecting her day to day living. Is there anything she can do to stop this? Gabapentin is 300mg, 3 tablets, 3 times a day.

hello, your mum could try a course of massage as this helps to break down knots or adhesions in the muscles, which build up over time, they then impede on blood vessels and nerves, which sometimes causes numbness and tingling sensations. I hope this has helped. Don't hesitate to contact me for any further help.
    Take care

Gabapentin is a drug which, as I understand it, mimics the action of the neurotransmitter GABA, which regulates the electrical activity of the brain, thereby helping to prevent seasures. I believe it has also been used to reduce nerve pain.
I don't see the connection between its use and numbness in the fingertips. It sounds like a circulation problem, which does generally first affect the extremities like toes and fingers.
Exercise and massaging the affected parts may well do a lot of good. Arie den Hollander. Holistic therapist.

I am an acupuncturist and I see many people who have symptoms such as your mother's, particularly in the NHS Pain clinic where I work. There could be many reasons for the numb sensation in your mother's fingertips, such as anything from Raynaud's to something unusual in her lower neck (lower cervical spine). She should inform her GP who may refer her to a neurologist or rheumatologist (if she also suffers with neck pain) and they may request an MRI to her cervical spine. Acupuncture is very helpful for your mother's symptoms and particularly if her symptoms are due to her cervical spine and do not require surgery. I have seen near enough to 100% success.
    Good luck,
    Christine
